Warm-Up 2

Warm-Up 2 is all about complaining. 'The Hire Car from Hell' is all about really bad treatment when renting a car in the USA. The idea for this Warm-Up came from the wonderful film,"Trains, Planes and Automobiles", with Steve Martin and John Candy. The task is set up so that you don't have any other option than to write a well-composed letter to the company in the USA - and hope for the best. The sum of money involved is too small to make it worth your while starting a legal action (at least from this side of the Atlantic - it'd be different if you were living in the USA, where they have Small Claims Courts). There's also a lot of scope for 'he said-she said' situations (which is how they describe situations where one person says one thing, and the other person says something different in American English).

The task itself is quite limited: you only have to write FIVE sentences from the letter you'd write (i.e. NOT the entire letter). The point is to see whether you can calibrate your language, so that you express yourself firmly, but refrain from insults and gratuitous comments that will just result in your letter being filed in the trash can! Once again, there's a link to the Send-In Task which comes next.

By the way, if you want to see what the practical problems of using language that's too strong are (and of letting emotion get in the way of your complaint), take a look at this scene from the film:

http://youtu.be/DsrXZ_Mdehw

Be warned, though. This scene is famous for the large numbers of times the word 'fuck' is used in a very short space of time!

You submit your Warm-Up Task 2 by copying your text into a comment. Remember to include FIVE sentences only - and to include your name in the submission.

By the way, if you don't know what the 'redeye' is, take a look at the first comment on this post.

53 comments:

  1. The 'redeye' is any flight which involves you getting on a plane late in the evening, flying all night, desperately trying to sleep in an uncomfortable plane seat … then arriving early in the morning in crumpled clothes, without a chance of a shower or a decent breakfast, possibly jet lagged and having to go straight into a day of meetings with people who got a good night's sleep, and are fresh and ready for a good day's work.

'Redeye' refers, of course, to what your eyes look like when you take a look in the mirror!

Regrettably, I must inform you that I have a number of complaints about the service of your local office at the airport. The car I rented was not tided up after the previous customer, the washer fluid was not refilled and finally the car broke down completely and I had to get help from a tow truck. I called your local office and was advised to pay the tow truck driver with my credit card, as they promised to refund the money and give me a 50% discount as compensation. Returning the car I dropped the keys into the returns box together with a note, as the local company´s desk had closed for the night. Now I have been debited the full amount and have not got the promised compensation.

  3. I realize that mistakes happen but I have to inform you that I received unsatisfactorily service and an unacceptable car at your Airport car service in New York. The car was not neat, the washer fluid was not refilled and it broke down on the highway resolving in that I had to get help from a tow truck. I called your customer service and they promised to refund me for the expenses for the tow truck plus give me a 50 % discount on the rental car as compensation. Since your desk was unstaffed when returning the car I left the keys in the return box with a note but I still got debited for the full amount. When the matter is resolved I’d be grateful for a suitable refund, I am looking forward to hearing from you and I will appreciate your help.

I was instructed by your staff to write to you, in hope that you will engage in a very particular situation that I ended up in regarding one of your rental cars in New York. I received a car that hadn’t been tidied after the last customer, and it was dysfunctional and not seen to in so many ways, that it broke down on the highway. I spoke to your staff on the phone whom promised to give me a full refund for the reparations which I paid then and there, as well as a 50% discount. When I returned the car there was no clerk so I left a note in the letter box regarding this matter, but that was some time ago and I have not yet been refunded. I would deeply appreciate your concern for this matter, as I am sure we can solve this misunderstanding.

  5. To whom it may concern,
I am very unsatisfied with my recent experience of renting a car through your company. When I got the car it was dirty and had a smell of cigarett smoke. In addition to the bad smell I discovered that the air conditioning was out of order and later that day the car broke down on the highway. I called the service number provided and they promised to reimburse me for the expenses for the tow truck, and also give me a 50 % discount on the rental car as compensation. I have been credited the full amount, even though they promised to refund me the money.

I am writing to complain the poor service at your car rent office at New York Airport, there I rent a car two weeks ago.

The car was not been cleaned after the earlier customer and after I had been driving just a short time, the engine stopped working and I had to call the tow truck for a charge of 50 $, that I paid myself.

When I called the local rental office, they promised to give me a compensation of 50$ for the expenses and that they would also give me 50% discount on the hire charge.

When I yesterday got the credit card statement, I noticed that I had been charged the whole amount. I am expecting to get a compensation for the inconvenience and promptly repayment of the expenses to my bank account.

  7. Unfortunately I must inform you that I have complaints about the service on your local office at the airport in New York. The car I got was dirty and not cleaned after the previous customer, there was no washer fluid and the car broke down on the freeway which resulted in that I had to take help from a tow truck. I called the office at the airport and got informed that I was going to be refunded the $ 50 for the tow truck expenses, plus a 50 % discount on the car fee. When I returned the car before departure there was no one at the office so I left a note in the letter box regarding the matter along with the car keys, but even though I was promised the $ 50 back plus the discount I have been charged the full amount. I’m expecting a resolution to this matter and that I will get the refund and discount that I was promised.

  8. I want to leave a complainant after renting a car at New York airport, 2014-02-14.
The car that I was dropped off at was really dirty inside, to add to this there were no washer-fluid and the engine stopped working, a tow truck driver helped me to fix the car, he was paid $50 in cash which the service desk people told me to do.
I got the information from your colleague at the service desk that I would get my $50 back and receive a 50% discount on the rental charge as compensation.
Yesterday when I received my credit card statement you have debited me full price for the car rental and there is no repayment of the $50 I paid for the tow truck.
I am very disappointed and sad for the bad service that I received from your company, that made my trip a really stressfull, please get in touch with me so we can solve this problem once and for all.

  9. Your company might not realize this problem so I am sorry to inform you my complaint that is about I received poor service of your local office at New York airport. Two days ago I rent a car from your company but the car I got was not cleaned after previous customer used it, so inside of car was dirty and bad smell, moreover there was no washer fluid and the engine stopped. As a result I had to ask your company for help, and I paid the tow truck driver the 50 dollar for call-out charge. Yesterday I got in touch with your company and got information that I would get would get the $50 back, and receive a 50% discount on the hire charge to compensate me for the inconvenience, however when I got my credit card statement, you debited my account with the full amount and there was no refund. I am sure we can solve this problem amicably, so I expect an immediate reply.

  10. Dear Sir,
My name is Leslie Vargas, customer ID 1234556, and I rented a car, paid by credit-card, from you February 28.

The car I got was not cleaned properly; it reeked of sweat, beer and cigarettes and it had left-over pizza in the back seat.

The horrendous smell was not the worst; the car broke down and I had to pay a tow truck driver 50 $ since you promised me that I would get reimbursed for that cost.

When returning the car; I left a note on your desk with all my information and details of what had happened since everybody had gone home for the night.

I was promised that all my expenses would be adjusted and if you do not reimburse or contact me within three days telling me why you do not want to do so, I will take legal action.

    Sincerely,
    Ms. Leslie Vargas

  11. Here are five sentences that I randomly picked from my letter:

This is unacceptable, the car I received was dirtier than anything I’ve seen before.

I can’t believe that you are making me pay for the tow truck after giving me a car in that condition.

This ruined a big part of my trip.

I was very surprised to see that the full amount was charged on my credit card.

Misconceptions can happen but please make it right for everyone’s best.

  12. Dear Mr/Ms

I am writing this letter because I have a complain about the car I rented from your company at the Newark Airport on March 1. The car was in very bad condition when I picked it up, it had not been cleaned and there were no washer fluid. Shortly after leaving the airport, the engine broke down on on the highway and I had to pay 50 dollars for a tow truck. When I contacted your company the day after, I was promised a refund for the tow truck expenses of £50 and a 50% discount on the hire charge. This never happened and the full amount has been drawn from my card.

I hope you could help me with this problem and transfer the promised compensation to my account as soon as possible.

  13. This is the third time I am contacting you after renting a car from you recently and now I demand an immediate explanation and substitution for the problems that occurred.

No one could possibly had checked the car before I rented it: it was extremely dirty with leftovers from pizza, the ashtrays were full and the car smelt of beer and sweat. Since it was raining I had no choice but driving this car and after a while I realised there was no washer fluid and then the engine stopped on the freeway.

Even though you assured me that the charges of the tow truck would be adjusted when I dropped the car off and that I would receive a 50% discount on the hire charge for the inconvenience, I have been debited for the full amount of money, inclusive the tow truck.

I am sure we can solve the problem amicably, but I require compensation as agreed as soon as possible.

    Yours sincerely,

Last weekend when I was in New York for a business meeting I rented a car from your company, I now have some complaints and was told to write to you. The car I rented from your company was full with half eaten food, the smell coming from the car was horrendous and there was no washer fluid. As if this was not enough the engine of the car stopped and the call to your company told me to call a tow truck, and together we manage to get the engine going again, for which I had to pay $50. When I the next day got in touch with your company I was told the charges would be adjusted, the $50 I paid the tow truck compensated and also I would get a 50% discount on the hire charge to compensate for my inconvenience.
Instead of getting the compensation I was promised from the company I have been charge the full amount of the car hire and my request is that you look into and solve this mistake.

  15. I am sorry to have to inform you about some problems that occurred when I rented one of your cars at the New York-airport recently. The car I was assigned didn’t seem to have been tidied after the last person who hired it since there were half of a take-away pizza in the backseat of the car, the ashtrays were full and there were no washing fluid left. The biggest problem was that the engine stopped right in the middle of the highway, which forced me to call a tow truck and pay the $50 call-out charge. When I spoke to your company the next day and described what had happened, they promised that I would get back the $50 and also receive a 50% discount as compensation when I dropped the car off on my way home. When I came back with the car, unfortunately no one was there so I left the keys in the return box and left a note about what happened, the problem is that I still have paid for the full amount and I have not received any compensation.

  16. Following our telephone conversation earlier today, I am writing to give you details of my complaint.
Short summary; the car I was given was a wreck, it was not cleaned, it had no water fluid, it stopped right at the highway and I needed assistance from a tow truck to get out of there!
When I first made my complaint directly to the car hire desk at the airport I was promised to get my USD 50 back (which I had to pay in cash to the tow truck driver) and to be compensated with a 50% discount. I paid my car hire with my credit card and now your company has performed a 100% withdrawal from my account, based on fact, I expect to receive a repayment of at least USD 50 plus 50% of the total rental sum.

I look forward to hear from you, or even better, to receive your repayment within a fortnight.

    Yours faithfully,

    Dear Madame,

Last week I used the services of your company and rented a car at the airport, and got a car that was not cleaned after the last customer, with a half-eaten pizza in the passenger seat, a funky smell of beer and sweat in the car and no washer fluid. Also, the car broke down on the high way and I had to hire a tow truck to help me, which I paid for up-front after I talked to your office and they promised me that I should get a repayment of the tow truck payment and also a discount on my car hire.

Next day, when I should return the car, your office was deserted, so I left the keys and a note about this in the return box. When I then received my credit card bill I was very surprised to see that your company had debited me the full amount for the car hire, and when I gave the rental office a call asking about this they denied all knowledge of our previous conversation about refunding the payment for the tow truck and part of the rental cost for the car. They told me to write to their head office instead, so now I´m looking forward to a response from you in this matter, and a refund of my money.

    Best regards,

  18. I have chosen the five first sentences of my letter:

A problem has occurred which I hope you can help me with. 2/27/14 I rented a car at your local office at the airport, unfortunately the car was not in a proper condition for renting (it was not cleaned inside and the water fluid was not refilled). While driving the engine suddenly stopped so I phoned your office at the airport and got the advice to pay a tow truck driver to help me out, which I did. Afterwards I got in touch with your local office and they assured me that I would be compensated for the tow truck (50 $) and receive a 50 % discount on the hire charge due to the cars' poor condition, which would be adjusted when I dropped the car off. Unfortunately I left the car at the airport when your office was closed and I have now been charged (on my credit card) the full amount of the hire fee.

    To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Sebastian Jeppsson, and on January 20 I rented a car from your company in order to drive to New York City and back.

However, the condition of the assigned car was, to say the least, quite poor; the car was dirty and smelled of sweat and beer, and there were food leftovers in the backseat, but worst of all, though, the ashtrays were not emptied - which can have disastrous consequences since I recently was diagnosed with a severe case of asthma.

When I finally got on the freeway towards New York City, the warning lights suddenly came on, and a couple of moments later the car engine broke down completely, which obviously, had me to call a tow truck.

The tow truck operator charged 50 USD for the work; money that you assured to refund as soon as I got back to Sweden, but it has now been five weeks and you still haven’t compensated me for my expenses (and the 50% discount that was promised when I first called you).

I look forward to your reply and a resolution to my problem.

    Best regards,

    Sebastian Jeppsson

  22. To whom it may concern,

Unfortunately I have a complain to make regarding the service on your local office at the JFK airport.
I was left alone at your parking spot with this filthy rental car you had offered me who the previous costumer had basically left as a garbage dump, but I had no choice and had to take the car.
I found out that the car was out of washing fluid and in the middle of the highway the engine stopped, luckily a tow tuck was nearby and he helped me and manage to start the car.
The next day I talked to your costumer service and they understood and they were willing to return 50% for the hire cost and $50 for the tow tuck service, but after receiving my credit card statement I noticed that none of this has been done and there are no fund returns.
You claim that you have not been informed about this and that is why I contact you at the head office, I hope we can work something out and figure out some form of compensation.

    Sincerely
    Miranda

  23. A problem has occurred which I am sure will be solved with your help. After reporting to your representative about an unfortunate situation with a hire car that did not live up to the set cleaning standards and where the engine broke down, I was promised a refund of my tow expenses (50$) as well as a 50% discount on my bill. Unfortunately, the airport office was closed when it was time to return the keys and settle the payment, and I had no other choice but to leave a note as a reminder of the incident.

I am certain of the fact that this is the result of a misunderstanding, but I have now been wrongly debited for the full amount and the office denied knowledge of the whole situation. My hopes are that this can be settled as soon as possible, and I will gladly return again as a customer in that case.

  24. Unfortunately, I must complain about the awful service I got from your company last week. I rented a car for two days at your office at NY Airport (18.02.14). After waiting in line for 1.30h, an employee (Ms. Laura Smith) without any professional attitude gave me a car with an absolutely regrettable condition. Due to this, after 30 km, this car (Opel Corsa), stopped in the middle of the M-11 road. I finally lost more than $640 in transport and hotels payments, apart from my professional credibility by missing important meetings because of this problem. Therefore, by this email, I would like to ask for a solution to this extremely poor customer service and the lack of responsibility in incidents that your company has showed me.

I regret to inform you that I have had a bad experience wile renting one of your company’s rental cars. At first everything worked out great, I quickly managed to rent my car, followed by a shuttle ride to the car park. It was after this that I started having problems, the car was dirty; filled with leftover pizza. Since it started raining I quickly got into the car and drove onwards only to realize that there was no washing fluid, something I believed was something that was included in the basic package. When I get to the free way the car breaks down and I am told to pay a tow truck with the promise of that price being removed from my bill together with a refund of 50%.

  26. Dear Ms/Mr,

I am sorry to inform you that your car rental service did not live up to my expectations.

When I first got the car, I immediately felt an unpleasant smell of smoke, sweat and alcohol. An old pizza-cardboard was also found in the backseat of the car. The car had not been cleaned since the previous customer and also, the washer fluid hadn't been refilled. It is unacceptable.

Moreover, the engine broke down on the freeway. Thankfully, a tow truck pulled up behind and helped me to repair the car and I ended up paying the tow truck driver $50 in cash. I called your office at the airport and I was promised that I would get $50 back and receive a 50% discount. But when I called a day after, the office denied all knowledge of the conversation and I was told to write a letter with a summary of my complaints.

Now I’ve gotten my credit card statement and to my surprise I’ve been debited the full amount and the compensation is nowhere to be seen. This is truly a disappointment and I'm looking forward to a response from your company in this matter, and also to receive a refund of the money, as promised.

  27. A problem has occurred which I hope you can help to solve, this is the third time I’m in contact with you about this problem, I rented a car from you the 22 of February and I was billed incorrectly. To summarize the history a bit the car that I rented was a total wreck but the main problem was that it broke down on the highway and I had to pay for a tow truck from my pock own pocket. And after I was in contact with you about this it was said that when I dropped of the car keys I would get reimbursed for the $50 I put out for the tow truck and another 50% discount for my inconvenience which I think is fair since there was a lot of issues with the car. But when I arrived your office was closed so I left the keys with a note in the mailbox.

I hope this is just a misunderstanding and it can be rectified soon because this situation is unacceptable to me.

The car was in a dreadful condition, it was dirty, smelled awful, there was no washer fluid left in the car and while I was driving on the freeway the engine stopped.

I had to pay a tow truck €50 to get the engine started again and after speaking with your service department I was assured I was going to be reimbursed for my expenses as well as compensated for the other inconveniences.

  30. Dear Sir

Recently I had the misfortune of hiring a rental car from your company. Previously having excellent experiences in this area I was extremely disappointed to find a number of errors such as; the cleanliness of the car; the fact that the car broke down; that I had to pay to get the car towed after it broke down and to top it all off I did not receive a discount that I had been assured of. As a frequent flyer I regularly use car hire companies and I can definitely say that this was the most disappointing experience I have encountered. Furthermore, I have tried to contact your head office to detail them of my problems but did not get a response. With this letter I hope you take the time to analyse the problems with your service and also provide reasoning as to why the car that I paid good money for was so badly maintained.

  31. I must inform you that I am greatly disappointed with your rental car service in New York.

The rental car service left me at an enormous car park without any help with my luggage in the rain with a car, a car that was not very tidy.

The car window was dirty, so I tried to clean it, but then I discovered that there were no washing fluid and not long after that the engine stopped and I had to pay $50 to a towcar.

The next day I got into contact with the hire company, and I let out many complains and the hire company assured me that I would get a refund for the $50 and 50% of the hire charge.

When my credit card statement came I had been debited for the whole amount and I had not been compensated for the $50 even though it had been promised, I look forward to speaking with you very soon so we can solve this matter.

Re: This is a notification of a complaint

I would like to notify you that I have a complaint about a recent hire and the charges of a car from your firm at the airport in the USA and I hope we can solve this together and I am hoping for continuing cordial relations.
I hired a car from your firm and it was in an unacceptable state it contained leftover food, the ashtrays were full and the car had a scent of beer and sweets and upon that it had started to rain and I got soaked before I got to a rubbish bin, the rain stopped but there was a lot of dirty spray and there were no washer fluids so the sight was poor, the warning lights on the car came on and the car stopped at the freeway and I had to stop a tow truck which I had to pay $50 to get the engine to start again also your office was closed when I arrived at the agreed time at 9.00 pm at the airport so I wrote your firm a note which I left in the return box with the keys.
I was in contact with your representative the next day and I was promised for all the inconvenience that I would receive the $50 back for the tow truck and that I would receive a discount of 50% on the hire charge.
Notify that I have been debited full amount for the hire of the car.
This is an emotional and a financial disadvantage to me accordingly to what I been throughout the whole experience with the hiring from your firm, I am sure that we can make this situation resolved amicably and the alternative will be to take the matter into the hands of my legal attorneys.

    Yours sincerely,

The least one would expect with a hire car is that it works. As the engine stopped, I contacted your representative and we agreed that I should pay for the tow truck call-out charge in advance. So far, I was not compensated for this as agreed. I hope that this is simply a misunderstanding and I am awaiting a prompt response. I would be satisfied with the promised refund of $ 50 and the 50 % discount.

  34. To whom it may concern:
Last week I rented a car from your New York office, and after having paid for the car with credit card, I was driven by the courtesy bus to a car park, where I was dropped off next to one of the most disgusting, dirty, foul smelling cars I have ever seen.
Since the bus drove of and left me in the rain I had no other choice than to use the grime car anyway, discovering the lack of washer fluid in my attempt to use the wipers to clean the wind shield, something that made me feel very unsafe.
In the middle of the drive the engine suddenly stopped, and I was advised via phone by one of your employees to pay the $50 call-out charge to the tow-truck driver, who then proceeded to fix the car by tapping the alternator with a hammer.
Being promised to be compensated for the $50, as well as getting a 50% discount, I arrived at the airport in good time for my redeye flight, only to find the desk deserted, why I dropped the key, along with a note, in the returns box.
Coming home to discover that the full amount had been debited from my credit card, in spite of aforementioned promises of compensation and discount, I now need you to contact me as soon as possible, so that we can sort this out.

  36. I am sorry to inform you that I have had a bad experience with your car rental service at Newark Airport last week.

At your helpdesk I met a apparently moody woman that gave me the impression that she didn’t enjoy her job at all, nevertheless she did a non satisfactory action to help me fill out the forms and answer my questions.

When I found the car in the parking lot, I was unpleasantly surprised. It was obvious that it hadn’t been cleaned in a long time, the dashboard was covered with dust, the seats were dirty and the whole car smell of smoke.

Even though the car was in bad condition I chose to use it, but I was quick to regret my choice. The petrol tank was nearly empty and so was the washing fluid, I didn’t come far before I had to fill it up.

I don’t ask for compensation, but I want an apology and I hope you take action for the poor customer service and lack of car care for future customers.

    Regards

    Dear Sir or Madam

I am sorry to say that I must inform you about some complaints I got from renting a car, 020114.
The experience I had with your company and your car was unfortunately not what I expected.
First and foremost someone had smoked in the car and it was used cigarettes everywhere, then the oil lamp begun to light up in the middle of nowhere. So I stop the car and called your customer support for Miami and they said I should check the oil level, call a tow truck and every penny I needed to pay I was going to get back. As long as I save the receipt and now after a month I still have not got any money.

    Yours sincerely,
    Ms. Sofia Johansson

I was assured that I would be rightfully compensated for my expenses when returning the car. I regret to inform you that this did not occur. Your desk was closed upon my arrival, and therefore I left a note with the car keys, explaining our agreement. Evidently there has been a mistake in your billing, because contrary to what we agreed upon, I was charged for the full amount. This is of course unacceptable and I expect to be fully compensated.

  39. I am sorry to inform you that I have had a very disappointing experience with your car rental service at JFK Airport on the 5th of April.

The car that I hired was in a dreadful condition with take-away pizza left in the car, the ashtrays were full, and the car smelt of beer and sweat. During my ride to NYC I found out that the washer fluid was empty and the engine stopped as well so I contacted your company and I was informed to pay the $50 call-out charge for the tow truck.

The following day I contacted your company again with several complaints and the custom service assured me that the charges would be adjusted (my $50 back and receive a 50% discount) when I dropped the car off.

Your service desk at the airport was deserted when I dropped off the car, therefor I am sending you this mail, demanding an apologize and expecting some compensation.

    Best Regards,

    To whom it may concern,
I am writing to bring to your attention a serious issue I had in your establishment last week.
To start with the car that was given to me was in an outrageously bad condition; it was not clean after the previous customers, the washer fluid was not refilled and last but definitely not least the engine broke down on the freeway.
Furthermore I would like to point out the lack of customer service I received at your office at JFK as your staff did not take my issue seriously, nor did they apologize for the inconvenience. They did promise me £50 for the tow truck I had to use and 50% discount on the rental car as compensation; however I was still debited for the full amount.
I hope I have made myself clear that I am very unsatisfied with your service therefore I require for the issue to be resolved promptly. Please get back to me with your thoughts.
    Sincerely,
    Johanna Karlsson

  41. Dear Xx

I recently rented a car from your firm in New York and I am very sad to say that your services has been below my every expectations.

After being left alone with a dirty car in your gigantic car park I managed to get going by myself ,some help with carrying my luggage to the car had not hurt.
Later on the engine broke down on the high way and I had to pay for a tow truck driver to help me, when I contacted custom service over phone about this I was promised a full refund for that cost plus a 50% discount for the car.
Today I got my bill from your company and there has been neither a discount or refund.

I am deeply disappointed in your company and I hope that you will stand by your word and correct this mistake, which I truly hope that this is.

    Regards

    Ms Jarl

  43. I am writing in regard of an unsettled arrangement, concerning a leasing of a vehicle which was handled in an incorrect way and due to what appears to be a mistake leaving the matter unresolved.

I leased a vehicle from your company in New York, a vehicle which was in a disgraceful state inverts, containing rancid food, residues of fumigation and a strong aroma of beer and due to previous occupations there was insufficient amount of washing fluid remaining.

In the course of the rental time a warning light activated and the engine ceased functioning and I was required to obtain assistance by a tow truck, after a consult thru phone with a representative in New York, who vowed to a refund for the $50 which was an acquired charge from the tow truck assistance.

I later contacted your representative again and expressed criticism concerning the vehicle state and was in response vowed a 50% discount on the leasing charge to compensate for the inconvenience as well as the refund for the $50, the amount be corrected when the vehicle was returned, however when I revisited the airport the company stall was unmanned and I was obligated to leave a short letter containing the agreement and the vehicles key.

There has since passed 30 workdays and no deputation on my charge has been made and I again contacted your representatives in New York who has mislaid my information and accuse me of fabrication, which leads to my inquiry if leasing’s of your vehicles regularly is handled in according manner and I expect you to personally acquire about me situation and contact me to establish a solution.

  44. My name is Jonas Amnesten and I rented a car from your company at New York airport. Unfortunately I need to inform you about your company´s poor service. The car I rented was not cleaned properly, or more fairly I would say that the car was not cleaned at all, since I found both pizza and other leftovers in the back seat.
However, the problems did not stop there. On my way to New York City the car’s engine broke down and I had to use the help from a tow truck to get the car running again. I called your office at the airport and I was advised to pay the tow truck driver the call-out charge of 50 USD. When I called the office the day after I was told that I would get a re-found on the 50 USD that I paid for the tow truck and a 50% discount on the rental payment when I dropped the car off at the airport on my way back.
But when I dropped the car off the rental office was closed, so I left a note with information about the whole issue together with the keys. I expected that the whole matter would be quite easy to handle and that I would get my promised re-found. But I was charged the full amount, so I called your rental office at the airport. Surprisingly they denied any knowledge of the matter and I was advised to write a letter to you at the New Your City head office.
I hope that you could help me resolve this matter as smooth as possible and that this would not cause any unnecessary inconvenience. I am looking forward for your response.
    Yours sincerely,
    Jonas Amnesten

  45. Business Writing – Warm-Up 2

My name is Anna Turesson and I am writing to you because of my deeply unsatisfying experience with your car hire in New York and to get my compensation that was agreed by your staff.

I paid the full amount of the car hire on my credit card, I got dropped off by the car and to my horror there was half a pizza left on the back seat and the car stank of beer, sweat and cigarettes because the ashtrays had been left full.

The car was very dirty and there was no washer fluid and all of a sudden the car broke down on a free way where a tow truck pulled up behind me that could help me start the car again and for this I had to pay the $50 call-out charge.

When I phoned the next day I was promised to get the $50 back as well as a 50% discount on the car hire for my inconvenience when I returned the car however when I dropped the car off at 9PM before leaving on the red-eye your desk was deserted so there was no one I could speak to so I dropped the keys with a note in the letterbox.

To my dismay when I received my credit card statement you had taken the full amount for the car hire, there was no sign of any compensation and when I phoned the airport office they denied all knowledge of my conversations over the phone and I was told to write to the head office so here I am writing to you and I expect to get the compensation I was promised.

  46. Subject: Reimbursement

    Hi,
I am writing to you regarding an unpleasant incident that occurred on 5th of March 2014; I hired a rental car from your rental station at Newark Liberty International Airport and the experience did not live up to my expectations.
The biggest problem was the state of the car: There was a half-eaten pizza left on the back seat; The ashtrays were full; The car smelled of sweat and beer; There was no washer fluid; and the engine broke down on the freeway headed towards New York City.
I contacted someone at your office and was told to pay a $50 call-out charge for a tow truck.
The next day, the 6th of March, I contacted your office and explained what had happened the day before; they assured me that I would be compensated and get the $50 call-out charge back as well as a 50 % discount on the hire charge to reimburse me for all the hassle.

Imagine my surprise when I got my credit card statement showing that you debited me for the full amount; I want to know what you are going to do next to compensate me for the inconvenience as well as the fact that you did not keep your promise to reimburse me.
    Awaiting your earliest reply,
    Ms. Eva-Karin Bystroem

  47. Robert Nieto:

When your courtesy bus dropped me by the hire car it just drove off and left me alone instead of staying to inspect whether the car was in a good condition, which it certainly was not. Your staff had not cleaned the car and inside the car I found old food, a full ashtray and besides from that the car smelt of beer and sweat.

When I was driving on the freeway the car suddenly broke down and I had to get in touch with a tow truck and pay $50 to the tow truck driver so that he could repair the car. When I contacted your company the next day to complain, your staff assured me that I would get the $50 back and receive a 50% discount on the hire charge when I handed back the car, to compensate for the inconvenience that happened on the previous day.

When handing back the car at your office no staff was there to help me and when returning home I realized that you had debited me for the full amount and not given me the promised compensation.

  48. Dear Sir or Madame,

I am sorry to have to inform you about my experience from renting a car from your company in York by march 9 th, 20014.

I am not pleased with the fact that the car wasn’t clean, there was no washer fluid left and while I was driving on the freeway it stopped. I had to pay €50 to get the car towed but after speaking with your service department I was assured to be reimbursed for my expenses and compensated for the other inconveniences. I am afraid though there has been a mistake because you have debited me the full amount.

I am expecting to hear from you as soon as possible, I am quite sure we can find an agreement.

    Faithfully yours,
    Josefina

  49. Hi David! Sorry for the late hand-in, I had problems with my interbet connection last night, sorry for that and I hope theres no problem.

Markus Nordh, Rented a car 9 of March 2014

    Dear car rental service!

This wasn’t what I paid for; this is a bad excuse for a car. First of all the transport service to the car-pool was very unprofessional, just leaving me out there in the rain, I was soaked before I even got into the trash container of a car. Then when I got into the car at first sight I saw left over pizza in the back. But that was not enough; the smell of beer and sweat was the worst I smelled in my whole life. All this happened before I even started the car. When I started to drive the windshield was full of shit and there were no washer fluid what so ever. Then disaster stroked and the engine stopped out on the highway.

After a while of trying to start the car again, I called for a tow truck. The truck driver helped me get in touch with you again and you promised to pay for the 50 dollar call-out charge. Then the truck driver helped again and by some magic started the car again. Without his help me whole stay in New York should have been a disaster, so big thanks to him.
And off course when I got my credit card statement I was debited for the full amount. This wasn’t what we decided and I would like to come in contact with you as soon as possible. This was the worst service ever and I will not stop complaining until I got what I want.

    Yours sincerely, Markus Nordh

  50. Hi David, sorry for the late hand-in. I wasn't able to post it yesterday as I told you in the mail. I think that it may be more convenient for you to grade if I post here. Therefore, despite that I already sent you the file, I will post it here again.

    Dear Sir,
I am afraid that I am not very satisfied with your services at New York Airport.

The car that I rented last Wednesday (2014-03-01) was a total mess when I picked it up and what’s worse, it broke down on the freeway so I had to pay the tow truck driver $50 for the call-out charge.

The next day I went to your company to ask for compensation and your staff assured me that I could get $50 back and receive a 50% discount; however, later I realized that my credit card was debited for the full amount and no refunds.

Indeed the whole situation has caused me quite a few inconveniences and I believe it will not be too unreasonable to ask for what your company had promised: the refunds of my call-out charge, which is $50, and the 50% discount.

I believe that this matter is nothing but misunderstanding and it can be solved soon.

    Yours sincerely,
    Chien-ting Yeh.

  51. Your complain handler told me at the customer service number that I will get 50 £ and 50 3 as a compensation for the inconvenience. Do you think that this is an adequate quality of service? It is at least not the level your company promises at the web pages. I would like an answer in soon and possible. I other ways the credit card company will collect my costs from you.

I would like to make a complaint about the unacceptable service I received after hiring a car from your local branch at JKF Airport in New York.
There was some inconvenience with the car such as a dirty interior and a lack of washer fluid, but most importantly was the fact that the car’s engine failed while I was driving on the freeway.

Your local branch assured me a refund of $50 for the tow truck charge, and to receive a 50% discount on the hire charge as a compensation for this unfortunate inconvenience.

There appears to be a mistake in your billing since the full amount has been debited from my account.

I expect to receive the refund of $50 for the tow truck charge, as well as 50% of my hire car fee.
